Subtle Corruption of Spirituality

Latest edit: Nov 2018, added section about Sufism

Whether it is the new age healer, the magnetic yogini, the charming channeler or alleged avatar from a seemingly distinguished tradition, whether in Europe, the USA or in India, more often than not, the true character behind a pious smile and seemingly noble mission is that of an energy vampire and soul thief.

The spiritual teacher / leader / guru / rinpoche usually speaks eloquently with charisma and verve, and induces addictive feelings of ecstasy. That he also sends energetic hooks and mental slides towards his targets remains for most unnoticed, unconscious.

Manipulation  techniques are manifold and multidimensional. Abuse happens in tangible form (financial misconduct, sexual liaison), and also on metaphysical level, in the invisible realms of our soul, consciousness and energies.

Descriptors (and depth of corruption) of these individuals vary, but each term aims at pinpointing their deceptive, dangerous character:
false gurus, parasitic gurus, dark spirits, spiritual predators, spiritual parasites, spiritual imposters, narcissists, fake gurus, cult leaders, soul snatchers, twilight masters, black magicians, asuras, adverse forces, demigods, devadas, …

I have already written about my own experience with parasitic gurus. Here now a collection of insights from other seers and researchers – valuable puzzle pieces from publicly available information:

“One reason gurus seem to glow is that they are absorbing the projections of everyone around them, feeding on the energy of the devotion, love and surrender coming their way. The guru sits on his throne (sometimes her throne) and accepts the adoration, money, attention, service, fealty of the people whose good karma it is to be able to kiss his feet. From there things get weird, usually. By absorbing the life force of dozens, hundreds, or thousands of worshippers, Gurus can glow with supernatural vitality, and then when they look at someone, they can shock and thrill them with the power of their gaze. Actors, rock bands, and performers of all types know how to do this, let the audience give them energy, and they accept it and then channel it back in a magic co-creation. This is part of the mystery of live performance. The Guru is someone who never steps off the stage, who takes it as his job to be the center of the universe. And it‘s a lot of work to pretend to be perfect, the living embodiment of the Divine, the Lord of the Universe in human form, 24/7. Gurus can go slightly insane from the pressure, I think, and from being continually tempted by money, power, fame, sex, and master/slave games. The group around a Guru is called an ashram, and ashramic groups are as Machiavellian, sadistic, ruthless, money-obsessed and power-addicted as the court around a king or emperor. The Guru is the ultimate Godfather – imagine a man walking down the street who has the charisma of Brad Pitt, the cunning of a Mafia boss, and who is defined as being greater than Jesus, greater than God. Gurus attract crowds of people, and each person in that crowd can have a completely different experience, and furthermore, that individual‘s experience can change radically from one moment to the next. How any one person interacts with the guru archetype is as complex as predicting how any one individual will respond to a bottle of rum or series of morphine injections. Culture, beliefs, early childhood experiences, psychic wounds, belief systems, religion. My impression is that the guru system works a lot better in India than it does in the United States. The problems of gurus in the West are many, but among them is this troubling sense that so many Westerners do not get their energy back from the guru. It‘s like loving someone who does not reciprocate – it just sucks the life out of you. For every person I know who is radiant because they love their guru, I know three or four for whom the guru is like a bad marriage, something that steals years off your life and leaves you broke, broken and bitter. Years wasted doing the wrong path.“

“There are dark spirits, and there are truth and light spirits. Most people are unaware there are dark spirits that are assigned certain purposes. We live in a multidimensional world with every kind of spirit force one could imagine. (…) A Twilight Master or dark entity in Imposter Spirit hierarchy makes an agreement with the user to exchange (take) a part of their light source for the experienced relief of pain, or other perceived oppressions being cleared. The person having no personal self awareness, spiritual development, nor conscious mind control over his own energy field, has just been swindled out of his energy body, for the smoke and mirror effect of having some “pain” in his physical body be released as an apparent “miracle healing”. This is a spiritual leader who is working with light forces and being manipulated by dark forces from the blind sight of mishandling their own negative ego. Usually what this means is the person in the leadership position may start to abuse power, acts from hidden or unseen motivations, starts wanting to control other people, manipulates group resources or people to achieve a desired goal. (…) An Imposter is defined as any Entity or human being that is saying words or expressions, or making representations that it does not embody, nor comprehend, nor behave or act in accordance with. He or she promotes false light authority and anti-life architecture through deception, lies of omission, manipulation with malice to promote intentional harm, death or destruction to serve its personal agenda. (…) Often the people that blindly follow the leader and easily give away their authority, have been traumatized through many lifetimes in the Master-Slave or Guru-Disciple archetypes. Most of these recruitments for spiritual communities use a similar template that can be immediately recognized, and that would be the power interplay between the Guru-Disciple archetypes. The Guru is given levels of Absolute power and worship from the devotee, in order for the disciple to believe she/he is blessed with eternal salvation through the grace being dispensed. Many groups still believe this to be the pathway to find God, rather than finding the God within.“

“The New Predator topic is something that needs to be disclosed because of its extreme lethality, toxicity and spiritual danger. In some respects, the New Predator has qualities of a classic Dark Side of Cupid, “alien love bite” dynamic, but presents with more ‘fallen angel’ characteristics. I want to emphasize that the New Predator love bite reports are increasing in their numbers and lethality, as more and more victims are coming forward. They are not limited to male ‘predators’ by any means, and include some female predators as well. These reports are not as numerous, but do happen. Because this is such a dangerous form of predation upon the human Spirit, it needs to be discussed on radio shows and webinars.“, „They parasite in us to live through us because they really do not have a true connection to the infinite spirit. (…) In order to live through us they have to copy themselves through us and in us, copy out the programme until we become their programme and act it out as puppets. Unless we wake up and say ‚get the hell out‘, and basically disengage.“
– Eve Lorgen, author & consultant

“These themes were typically known about in mytholgy with regards to the deities and demigods having relationships with humans and human hybrids. So we started seeing this love bite and the dark side of cupid with relationships to these higher beings. And this was usually centred around obsession and love, a personal bite – with regards to feeding themselves and needing that. Just like the greek gods that needed worship. It was like that on the level of personal feelings, which acted as food. On the whole there was something else happening that was far more predacious and far more dangerous, on hyperdimensional and interdimensional levels, which was really a work in progress. And this work in progress I feel that the gnostics knew, and they basically wrote an introduction to the stage of what is really happening here and what is predating us, but they were never able to complete the whole account. Unfortunately they were hijacked and killed before they could finish it. But I really do believe they would have written about this as they did see it in the making. And this project goes way beyond. This is not about love per se. This is really about spirituality and the originals. This is about those who are seeking connection with regards to their spiritual gnosis, and how they are evolving and branching out. How they are breaking through the shackles. So when people are starting to wake up, many seek connections that can help them grow and nurture this evolution of spirit. So this new predator was designed specifically to attack that, and to procure its essence. Cannibalise it in order for them to take it over, and become it. This is a very deep and diabolical means by which mimircy is literally taking over, like through osmosis and the theft of the individual. When it is completed, when the process has completed successfully, the victim then is left without their essense, if they don‘t unhook themselves. This level of predations goes far beyond any kind of previously understood knowledge, or experiences that until now were relegated to the affairs of the heart. Because this is really an affair of the spirit. This is about the essence of a being. It is not related to a love connection. Although what you see mostly is, that those predators have an array, a collection of people. And you can see this in cults or in individual predators who travel all around and collect victims under the guise of some spiritual movement. So it is not an experience under the love section. Although the victims experience a 1:1 connection to the new predator which would very much feel like a confusion between the spirit and the heart. (…) Now we see almost a viral situation where these people, these beings are allover. Unlike anything before. (…) You have got a being that takes, absorbs, cannibalises and eats your essence. Consumes your consciousness, and leaves you without it. And by virtue of doing that they can tap into everything that you are connected to. So they can tap into your past, your past lives, tap into your gnosis and retrieve pearls of truth from the great sea of the multiverse. But you as the victim would not know it, you would not know it comes from you. You would just be amazed and enthralled, would be smitten by somebody who you feel has the same spiritual connection to everything. This is part of the lure of the spirit. It is just a projection of you to you, but you are not aware of it. So you actually fall for the believe that this person has the same path and same spiritual desire for truth, and ability to procure an essence out of the multiverse which is a very rare thing. So it‘s very diabolical because before you know it you are deeply inside and imprisoned within a system that uses an infinity mirror system of projections of yourself, while your essence is getting removed.”

„There’s a growing epidemic in yoga culture: the infamous “guru” teacher. Who is this guru teacher you might ask? The answer is complicated. My definition of a destructive guru teacher is this: any teacher who believes their own ability to heal others outweighs any student’s ability to heal themselves. Don’t get me wrong, there are many inspiring souls out there with valuable knowledge. Guidance from them can be amazing. Having mentors and people out there motivating you to be your best self can be a major asset. The problem happens when we place our personal power into someone else’s hands. And that’s exactly what materializes when a guru teacher takes advantage of a student’s vulnerability. No one is ever able to recognize any qualities without seeing it within themselves first. It is the interesting relationship that blossoms when projection and transference are at play. Projection is casting the qualities of the self onto another person. If perfection is seen in another person, then it’s clear there’s perfection within the self as well. Transference is a bit more complicated. It is transferring the emotions and qualities of another person onto a completely different person. Years ago when I was in India, I had a few experiences with my yoga teacher that proved to be enlightening. I was frustrated with some of his teaching methods and frequently felt rejected by him, which was weird to me since I also caught myself seeking his approval. When he gave me that pat on the back or that head nod with a smile, I found myself beaming. I soon realized this was similar to the relationship I had with my mother growing up. I never felt I was good enough unless I had her approval. I ended up transferring the tendencies of my mother onto my teacher, which resulted in the same dynamic.“
– Emily Kane (excerpt from elephant journal, “How to spot a dangerous guru”)

Spiritual Predators can be people, groups or organizations who take advantage of other people‘s searches and exploration of consciousness or soul related matters. Instead of being empowering and pointing back at yourself, or giving you tools that you can use on your own, their teachings tend to create a need for them in your life. They will present themselves as the ultimate authority on truth and the gate keepers of the one and only true path. Or they will show up as “saviours” which in turn will keep you stuck as a “victim” (in need of their saving). And this of course brings me to another important aspect. Even if you have been on the spiritual path for a while, it is always a good idea to check if you unconsciously become a predator yourself.“
– Inelia Benz, author & transformer

“Usually these New Predator‘s are men (and some women), who seek out the opening, creative spirit held in the womb space for their own gain. When you find yourself from underneath the rubble of such an encounter – you will be carrying the antidote to such a venomous ‚Love Bite‘.  The antidote is a clear, calm awareness and an ability to inform and empower others. It’s time to name the elephant in the room, and encourage women back into their own seat of sovereign power.“
– Anaiya Sophia, mystic & author

“Even after someone may begin to approach certain awakened, self-realized or enlightened states of consciousness, this does not mean their work is done. Unfortunately though, some people do in fact attain a certain degree of realization, feel that there is nowhere further to go, and are then quick to begin teaching, without actually having brought their realization to completion and full integration in a Heart-centered manner. This can create these types of situations between students and teachers, so-called gurus and disciples, in which people are harmed because the teachers themselves have not been fully healed and transformed. In these cases, the teachers are half baked, pretending as if they’re not. With certain degrees of realization, one most definitely becomes very charismatic, radiant, and intuitive, perhaps with high degrees of psychic abilities. They may certainly have a very high level of spiritual awareness and the ability to express and teach it in a manner that many can benefit from. However, if these traits are in the hands of a person that has not processed their deeper traumas, pain and outdated ways of operating, there can be problems. (…) The fact of the matter is that people that are stable do not seek out spiritual guidance very intensely. It’s always people that are going through a phase of vulnerability that want to join these kinds of groups or follow certain teachers and gurus. When you combine these vulnerable people with a charismatic but unintegrated teacher, abuse is likely to show up. (…) Oftentimes, a student is attracted to the teacher’s embodiment and radiance of divinity, but not everyone has a high enough level of discernment and discipline to understand this type of attraction. So, it becomes interpreted as merely a sexual or romantic attraction rather than something transcendent. When an unintegrated, half-baked teacher is presented with vulnerable students that may express certain interest in them, without proper discipline, the teacher may find themselves falling into lust and into mistreatment. (…) This issue of teachers potentially becoming exploitative and destructive has to do with the misunderstanding that once a person has a certain spiritual realization, they no longer have any wounds to heal or deep things to overcome. This isn’t true. A person can be considered enlightened without being fully healed. If someone that is charismatic and attractive with deep unresolved issues begins to lead a group of vulnerable people, things can definitely go astray.“

“There is a system wide infection which is a kind of rogue processing element that wipes the memories of any unprotected individuals, thus the only way to survive is to either link together into a union where people manage the information of the living and the dead or to completely remove one’s self from the entrainment protocols of the daemon processing systems which are not necessarily ‘evil’ but are disconnected from the sense of interact with a person as anything other than a set of protocols and functions from which to operate to serve the system as a whole through the energy harvesting process.
The memory and energy of the individual, the personality, is literally the food for these entities who siphon the energy and collect the energy of the masses to bring to overlords or system lords. The entire society is merged with this energy harvesting system so that there is no any one portion of the reality here, within civilization, that is not managed by some individual leader, taking orders from a chain of command that leads directly to the overlords and then to the system lord. This is simply how energy and experience works in the construct, like rivers or tributaries the energy will flow and this isn’t, in any way, any small system that is taking place here, so there must be somewhere for all this energy to flow and someone is going to use it, that’s the whole point, that’s nature, existence, physics, common sense, causality, however you want to look at it, the energy of the reality generation system is used to enhance the life energy of controller demigods who exist just outside of the physical plane and people in this society have made deals with these entities.“

There are forces and beings that are interested in maintaining the falsehoods they have created in the world of the Ignorance and in putting them forward as the Truth which men must follow. In India they are termed Asuras, Rakshasas, Pishachas (beings respectively of the mentalised vital, middle vital and lower vital planes) who are in opposition to the Gods, the Powers of Light. These too are Powers, for they too have their cosmic field in which they exercise their function and authority and some of them were once divine Powers who have fallen towards the darkness by revolt against the divine Will behind the cosmos. The word „appearances“ refers to the forms they take in order to rule the world, forms often false and always incarnating falsehood, sometimes pseudo-divine. The hostile forces exist and have been known to yogic experience ever since the days of the Veda and Zoroaster in Asia (and the mysteries of Egypt and the Kabbala) and in Europe also from old times. These things, of course, cannot be felt or known so long as one lives in the ordinary mind and its ideas and perceptions; for there, there are only two categories of influences recognizable  the ideas and feelings and actions of oneself and others and the play of environment and physical forces. But once one begins to get the inner view of things, it is different. One begins to experience that all is an action of forces, forces of Prakriti psychological as well as physical, which play upon our nature – and these are conscious forces or are supported by a consciousness or consciousnesses behind. One is in the midst of a big universal working and it is impossible any longer to explain everything as the result of one‘s own sole and independent personality. Those who have developed the inner view of things on the vital plane have plenty of experience of the hostile forces.
The Asuras and Rakshasas etc. do not belong to the earth, but to supraphysical worlds; but they act upon the earth-life and dispute the control of human life and character and action with the Gods. They are the Powers of Darkness combating the Powers of Light. Sometimes they possess men in order to act through them, sometimes they take birth in a human body. The Asura has self-control, tapas and intelligence, but all that for the sake of his ego. On the lower vital plane the corresponding forces we call the Rakshasas which represent violent passions and influences. There are also other kinds of beings on the vital plane which are called the Pishachas and Pramathas. They manifest more or less in the physico-vital. On the physical plane the corresponding forces are obscure beings, more forces than beings, what the Theosophists call the elementals. Some kinds of Asuras are very religious, very fanatical about their religion, very strict about rules of ethical conduct. Others of course are just the opposite. There are others who use spiritual ideas without believing in them to give them a perverted twist and delude the sadhak. It is what Shakespeare described as the Devil quoting scripture for his own purpose. At present what they are most doing is to try to raise up the obscurity and weakness of the most physical mind, vital, material parts to prevent the progress or fulfilment of the sadhana.
The evil forces are perversions of the Truth by the Ignorance – in any complete transformation they must disappear and the Truth behind them be delivered. In this way they can be said to be transformed by destruction. Often, representing themselves as divine powers, they mislead, give erring suggestions and impulsions and pervert the inner life.
To say that all light is good is as if you said that all water is good – or even that all clear or transparent water is good: it would not be true. One must see what is the nature of the light or where it comes from or what is in it, before one can say that it is the true Light. False lights exist and misleading lustres, lower lights too that belong to the being’s inferior reaches. One must therefore be on one’s guard and distinguish; the true discrimination has to come by growth of the psychic feeling and a purified mind and experience.“
– Sri Aurobindo, yogi, mystic & philosopher (excerpts from Sri Aurobindo‘s ‚Letters on Yoga‘, The Divine And The Hostile Powers)

“They can be destroyed, but it is only the pure spiritual force which can destroy them. For example, in a vital battle (there are people who have a vital fighting power), the experience is always the same: if you fight in the vital world with a vital being, you can crush it, kill it, but it will be reborn always – always they form themselves again. I think herein lies the origin of the legends of hydras or monsters with many heads. There is only one force in the world which can destroy them categorically, that is, without any chance of return, and it is a force which belongs to the supreme creative Power. It is a force that comes from beyond the supramental world – it is not at the disposal of everybody. It is a luminous force, of a dazzling whiteness, so brilliant that if ordinary eyes looked at it, they would turn blind. A being of the vital world has just to be touched by this light to get dissolved immediately – it is liquefied, like those slugs which melt in water if a little salt is put on them.“
– Mother Mirra Alfassa, mystic & artist (Collected Works of the Mother, vol.4, pp 184-187)

“We may not succeed the first time in dissolving these attacks, but more and more they will seem to take place on the surface of our being; we may be shaken, upset, yet deep down we will feel the “Witness” in us, unscathed and unaffected–he is never affected. We fall and get back up again, each time becoming stronger. The only sin is discouragement.  In practice, the seeker of the integral yoga will be far more exposed than others (Sri Aurobindo often said his yoga was a battle), because he seeks to embrace everything in his consciousness, without rejecting anything, and because there is not just one passage to open up to the bliss above, not just one guardian of the treasure to subdue, but many passages, to the right and the left and below, at every level of our being, and more than one treasure to discover.“
– Satprem, author & student of Mirra Alfassa (extract from Sri Aurobindo or the Adventure of Consciousness, p 68)

“sthāny-upa-nimantraṇe saṅga-smaya-akaraṇaṁ punar-aniṣṭa-prasaṅgāt“ translated into English: “On being invited by the devadas there should be no attachment and pride, because of the possibility of revival of hybris and the undesirable.”
– Patanjali Yoga Sutra (III.52)

“After the manifestation of siddhis, the yogi becomes the object of respectful invitation from the powers in charge of different actions, for example, the devatas. In such circumstances he should not show any attachment or pride, otherwise there is the possibility of revival of undesirable reactions. The yogi suffers from physical or mental troubles; therefore, it is said in this sutra that he should be careful and should not show any attachment or pride.
In different stages, the yogis are invited by authorities of higher astral planes and it is here that the yogi should exercise absolute restraint. He should avoid attachment and pride, then he can go ahead and reach the goal from where there is no return, but if he does not take this precaution, then he has to undergo a punishment. It also means that when one has any spiritual power in hand, one should first of all try to fulfil these two conditions, that is, freedom from attachment and freedom from pride. Until these two conditions are fulfilled, he should decide not to use his occult or psychic powers.”
– Swami Satyananda Saraswati in Four Chapters On Freedom (Commentary On Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra III.51, Causes of Downfall: “Sthanyupanimantrane sangasmayakaranam punaranistaprasangat”)

“They can make a person angry, can make people stirred up and fighting with each other, can break up marriages and families. (…) They can whisper into the hosts‘s mind thoughts and ideas which the host thinks are his own. (…) Particularly demonic entities are very deceptive. They can appear dark and cold, but sometimes also appear as beings of light with white robes and loving eyes like angels, or even as god. They can create an illusion of light in and around them, even communicate lovingly…“

12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: – Ephesians 6:12-17

“One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light but by making the darkness conscious.”, “If it (the Shadow) is repressed and isolated from consciousness, it never gets corrected and is liable to burst forth suddenly in a moment of unawareness. At all events, it forms an unconscious snag, thwarting our most well-meant intentions.”, “Whenever contents of the collective unconscious become activated, they have a disturbing effect on the conscious mind, and confusion ensues. If the activation is due to the collapse of the individual’s hopes and expectations, there is a danger that the collective unconscious may take the place of reality. This state would be pathological. If, on the other hand, the activation is the result of psychological processes in the unconscious of the people, the individual may feel threatened or at any rate disoriented, but the resultant state is not pathological, at least so far as the individual is concerned. Nevertheless, the mental state of the people as a whole might well be compared to a psychosis.”, “Knowing your own darkness is the best method for dealing with the darknesses of other people.”
– Carl Jung, psychologist, anthropologist & researcher

“Our modern world has been constructed as such by psychopaths and anti-spiritual forces. They used networking, deception, manipulation, force, demagoguery, and all kinds of cunning tricks to allow the corrupt to secure their power. They have control over much of mainstream media, entertainment, music, finance, education, medicine, science, universities, military, and industry. So it’s a very hostile environment for good people. (…) The whole thing is a syndrome comprised of multiple problems. (…) First problem is that mental illness is rampant and legitimized in our culture to the point where the insane can hold political office. (…) Second problem is that most people are extremely easy to nudge and persuade subconsciously by ghosts, demons, aliens, remote influencers, subliminals, voice-to-skull technologies, manipulated dreams, abduction and posthypnotic programming, etc. So long as they lack a critical level of sentience required for self-examination, self-correction, and lucidity, they are one-way programmable machines that take whatever input they are given. (…) Some, however, are conscious of their roles. These are people who can hear voices, or can perceive the entities or at least what the entities project into their minds as an image of themselves (which is usually a disguise). These people are given a bullshit story about the benefits they’ll receive for working with these entities, and it serves their egos in some way. Many enter into an active relationship with the entities, allowing them or encouraging them to take more control. The person loses more and more of himself, and eventually becomes an instrument of these forces. Outwardly they can be good at hiding it, unless they are severely mentally ill then they’ll talk about it and appear schizophrenic to others and give it away. But point being that there are people who knowingly and willingly serve a hidden manipulator. The probably think of themselves as prophets or secret agents for that force, to be rewarded for serving it. (…) So it’s a sliding scale really, from the more plausible and mundane to the more fantastic and bizarre. But all of these act sort of like the control rods in a nuclear reactor, slowing down the reaction. Or alternately, sand in the engine. They act as friction and control systems that moderate human civilization, adding friction, stress, and deception everywhere. They are the friction that generates the heat (loosh energy) that the matrix forces feed on, and the crude oil on our feathers that keeps us from flying. Some are just stupid childish people, others are groomed/ programmed, others are actively being piloted by a nonhuman force. (…) Good people aren’t always strong or wise or discerning or good fighters. There was a time when a good person was also a good fighter; these were the old chivalric knights from long ago. As centuries went on, “good” became contaminated with the idea of meekness, per the lies and mistranslations that were inserted into religion. And politically it became “good” to be against violence, to let the state/police do all the protecting for you, to hate guns and be a progressive person who was actually a wimpy hipster. Point being that the ideal good person is someone who not only has a good heart, but is also brave, smart, powerful, and capable. Good people who are like harmless bunnies are okay, and many still achieve much. But when they come up against negative suppression, some go soft too easily. If they were also good fighters (social fighters, legal fighters, word/research fighters, etc.) then they could push back and balance things out more. In fact, I think that’s one of their lessons, to gain a bit of ‘tactical skill’ to make themselves a bit tougher, but without losing their heart or divine energy. That’s the only way to liberate dark forces from their own ignorance, to show them it’s possible to be a good guy and a bad ass at the same time, which is more than they will ever be if they stick to their ways. It’s not about being a devouring wolf or peaceful sheep, but about being the shepherd who has the best of both.”

“Jinn (Arabic) also Romanized as djinn or Anglicized as genies (with the more broad meaning of spirits or demons, depending on source) are supernatural creatures in early pre-Islamic Arabian and later Islamic mythology and theology. Jinn are not a strictly Islamic concept, rather they may be various pagan beings integrated into Islam. Since jinn are not inevitably evil (nor good), Islam was able to adapt spirits from other religions during its expansion. (…) Besides the jinn, Islam acknowledges the existence of demons (Shayāṭīn). The lines between demons and jinn are blurred, since malevolent jinn are also called shayāṭīn. However both Islam and Western scholarship, generally distinguishes between angels, jinn and demons (shayāṭīn) as three different types of spiritual entities in Islamic traditions.”

“Mysticism in general — and certainly when it’s related to mass gatherings — can sometimes corrupt into a pure flight from of reality. That’s also why it’s not unusual in mystical environments (Islamic as well as others) to come across dubious devotement and pseudo-magical rituals.
Another example of the pitfall of folk mysticism is the manner in which the status of ‘mystic’ is sometimes exploited. Some of the most flagrant examples thereof are related to wandering ‘pirs’, ‘faqirs’ or ‘dervishes’ who don’t just preach spiritual messages but also often offer their services as supernatural healers. Without any medical knowledge, they try to solve psychological problems as well as physical illnesses with all sorts of rituals and prayers. It should not wonder that their ‘skills’ often don’t alleviate the problem but sometimes even make it worse. And it becomes extremely grim when some of them turn to criminal behavior. Let it be clear however that these forms of charlatanry and shameful abuse don’t prove that all mystical healers are cheats. (…) But, of course, it also doesn’t help if we act as if Islamic mysticism, through some incomprehensible miracle, remained completely devoid of every sort of perversion. Just as well, Islamic mysticism isn’t free from the more subtle power plays that can arise when a master-pupil relationship becomes unhealthy. Spiritually speaking, guidance by a master can often be very necessary but because the master-pupil relationship has such a very central place within Islamic mysticism, the sheikh can sometimes demand unquestioning obedience and restrict his pupil in pernicious ways. (…) In light of all of this, it’s also of the utmost importance that the Sufis themselves were very conscious of these kinds of abuses, perversions and problematic expression of Islamic mysticism. The truly great mystics often criticized the thoughtlessness of certain rituals in folk Islam, the lawlessness of certain wandering preachers and the dubious teachings of certain sheiks. However, these criticisms differed strongly from the general and categorical rejection of ‘Sufism’ as we can encounter today. The classical scholars never voiced criticism on ‘Sufism’ as a separate strand of Islam, but simply voiced their concerns about the hypocrisy of specific people. They considered the mystical aspect of religion as self-evident (which highlights the normativity of that aspect yet again), but they did oppose those who didn’t genuinely strive for the mystical essence of Islam.

Those who feel inspired by ‘Sufism’, however, often prefer to ignore the tensions between theory and practice. Because of the modern division between religion and mysticism, hypocrisy and deception are associated with religion. Mysticism, on the other hand, seems free of such things. As a result, contemporary spiritual seekers often remain blind to the dark sides of Islamic mysticism. Because of their deep wish to only see radiating beauty they remain oblivious to these aspects of ‘Sufism’, even though the Sufis themselves have been recognizing and condemning them for centuries.”
– Jonas Atlas, The Dark Side of Sufism

“More commonly than you may think, darkworkers will be actively involved in light groups/events, giving workshops and writing articles. What else would you expect them to do? Sit quietly on the sidelines! Would you? If you were on the dark side, you would be doing all you could to disrupt any light activity. You would be getting yourself well known, perhaps writing lots of books maybe even becoming a guru, doing anything you could to cause the most damage. It is important for us to go beyond the innocent notion that no-one could knowingly want to cause harm. Some can and do! It can help you to learn some of the ways that dark forces get access to lightworkers. We all know the dark forces often use lightworkers to channel their false messages and information. If a lightworker has ego present (and fails to discern negative energy), this can be easy for them to achieve. What we need to do is to look beyond the person channeling, to see the energy source using the channel.“
– Sandy Stevenson, consultant

“The primary way spiritual predators propagate themselves is through deception. They obtain spiritual contracts with souls and people – by deceiving them. Spiritual predators prey upon vulnerable souls. They can literally steal a soul and use it as an energy source.  They can suck a soul out of its body if someone’s alive, they can steal it after it dies. Groupies can be affected, as well as family members, friends or even neighbors, strangers, anyone who comes in contact with them, pets, property. Spiritual predators spread their energy like a social disease. Here is what I have done to protect myself as I’ve been systembusting spiritual predators. I reset my agreements through the Universal Source.  This was like pushing a “reset button” on all my agreements. This is a powerful and effective process to free you from unwanted energies, attachments, imbalanced contracts. “
– Theresa Annette Nygard, therapist & teacher

Unfortunately, most people are not ready yet to hear about the negative phenomena in the subtle realms. They might be waking up, but can not yet differentiate energy signatures and bodyfield disturbances.

Pleasant easy new age approaches keep many entertained and hooked. But avoidance of uncomfortable topics, resistance to critical thinking and own energetic housekeeping (self-awareness practice) ultimately caps an individual‘s evolution. It can prevent a seeker from discovering his blind spots (trauma denial, fears and other shadow aspects) and therewith make him all the more vulnerable to manipulation.

In view of my own experience, I would like to add, that an encounter of the above dark kind can be a gift in disguise. Such was the case with me. It opened my eyes and brought a healthy disillusionment and sobriety to my reality, and spirituality.
